Course Description

The replacement for the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) since September 2024

The Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (Further Education and Skills), often shortened to the Level 5 DiT, is the full teaching qualification for anyone who teaches, or wants to teach, learners aged 16 and over. It covers further education colleges, adult and community learning, independent training providers, apprenticeships and workplace training.

From 1 September 2024 the Level 5 DiT replaced the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET), previously known as DTLLS. It is the teaching qualification you need before applying for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status through the Society for Education and Training. Holding QTLS is recognised as equal to QTS, so you can also teach in schools in England.

How the online Level 5 DiT works

You study online through our learning platform, at your own pace, and put the theory into practice in a real teaching placement. The diploma is awarded by Focus Awards and regulated by Ofqual (qualification number 610/5281/4). There are no exams. You are assessed through written assignments, a portfolio of teaching evidence, 10 observed lessons and a final professional discussion.

Two qualifications for one price

When you complete the Level 5 DiT, you also receive the Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices at no extra cost. It recognises your knowledge of internal quality assurance and adds a second certificate to your professional portfolio.

Who is this teaching diploma for?

The course suits FE lecturers, vocational tutors, skills trainers, apprenticeship tutors and industry professionals moving into teaching. You do not need the Level 3 AET or Level 4 CET first, but you do need Level 2 English and maths, expertise in the subject you teach and access to a teaching placement. Read our guide to the Level 5 Diploma entry requirements for the full detail.

Yes. From 1 September 2024 the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching replaced the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET), also known as DTLLS. If you already hold the DET or DTLLS, you do not need to take the DiT.

You need to be 18 or over and hold Level 2 English and maths. You should also have qualifications or experience in the subject you want to teach, good digital skills, and access to a suitable teaching placement in the FE and Skills sector.

No. You can enrol on the Level 5 DiT directly as long as you meet the entry requirements and have a teaching placement.

Yes. The diploma is built around real teaching practice, so you need a placement in an FE and Skills setting before you start.

You need 250 hours of placement practice, of which at least 150 must be teaching. At least 100 teaching hours must be in your specialist subject, at least 80 hours face-to-face and at least 20 hours live online. Remaining hours can be wider professional activity such as planning, meetings and CPD.

There are 10 formal observations, each lasting at least 45 minutes, usually with a group of 10 or more learners. Early observations are developmental, while later ones assess your competence. Up to two can be carried out by live remote delivery, plus one more remotely where suitable feedback arrangements are in place.

Observations can be carried out by your course tutor, a subject specialist or your placement mentor.

Yes. You need two people at your placement: a subject specialist mentor who supports your teaching in your subject, and a pastoral mentor who supports your wellbeing and overall progress. Each usually gives around 30 minutes of support per week.

There are no exams. You complete written assignments, build a portfolio of teaching evidence, pass 10 observed lessons and finish with a professional discussion.

Yes. Once you hold the Level 5 DiT you can apply for Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status through the Society for Education and Training.

Yes. When you complete the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching, you also receive the Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practices at no extra cost. If you want to work as an internal quality assurer, our Education Quality Assurance Essentials Bundle adds the Level 4 IQA practitioner award.

Typical roles include FE lecturer, vocational tutor, skills trainer, apprenticeship tutor and assessor, in colleges, independent training providers and adult and community education.

Your course access is valid for 12 months. If you need more time, your access can be extended, subject to conditions.
